Setsubun purification

Japanese is following after English.

As many people know, February/3rd is "Setsubun", the day before the calendrical beginning of new year, spring.

Last day of the year is considered as one of the most important days in a year, and for the preparation of coming new year, people purify their body and soul by throwing soybeans. It is said that the origin of "Setsubun".

Originally, people believe that cereals have power which can get rid of evil spirits, and soy bean has been considered as important cereal as well as rice and wheat.

This year's "Setsubun" is Sunday of February/3rd, and next year is Monday. So that I don't want to miss the chance to experience purification :D

And I decided to visit Zojoji temple where I used to give a call last summer for questions as a licensed tourist guide and a monk was so kind to answer me.

One day before "Setsubun", a friend gave me a message that he can meet me next day. I asked him that I want to show him Ueno Rabbit Tour which is impressed and interesting.

I am happy to hear that he appreciates my request.

Then I replied him that I intended to visit to Zojoji temple for "Setsubun".

The "Setsubun" day, it was sunny picturesque beautiful day.

Before throwing soy beans, the temple had shown pounding mochi (rice cake), and throw purified rices cake which were different from pounding right now.

After that, throwing soybeans are executed 5 times. People can experience for one time only, and when people want to experience again, they need to go to the waiting line.

Monk said that some of them are fortune lottery such as hotel vouchers, Tokyo tower admission tickets.

When rice cakes were throwing, the audience became excited and wanted to come near the stage. My friend and I were violently jostled in a crowd.

Unconsciously, one of rice cakes was flying down in my palm of the hand.

I looked it with amazement. I push it with my fingers, and found it was still warm and soft. Invisible mysterious sense was coming down to me.

A little distant place, I recognized my friend who was embarrassed by squeezed in a crowd. I showed him my precious rice cake.

Next, soybeans throwing had started.

Not only soy beans but also snack food bag, Furikake (dried food sprinkled over rice), and others were flying on the beautiful sky.

It was unusual experience and they were beautiful enough to look like jewels.

I was to devote myself to obtain soybeans. I wanted to have soybeans so much and forget about hotel voucher and Tokyo tower admission tickets.

Some people held a big paper bag over head and I thought it was unfair and I was a bit annoyed with that.

When I came to realize, the soy bean throwing had finished and the monk announced,

"The first stage has finished now, and you can join one program only, please give a seat for next people. Even though you can't get soybeans, just only coming here today, you are purified."

When I heard the monk's word, I came to my sense.

I noticed that evil spirits exist in my mind, “obtain soy beans”.

I think it is better that I can't get soybeans, it taught me the importance of humility.

After bean throwing event, I showed around Yanaka area to my friend.

We enjoyed strolling and watching galleries and shops in Yanaka in sunny winter day.

I reminded that European woman who I met in Meguro museum a year ago, she described winter in Japan, "Actually it's cold, but sunny weather is nice".

I feel like that it was long ago, and at the same time, it was a day before.

Life is miracle.

節分の豆まきに君を思う・・・

皆さんご存知のように、2月3日は「節分」です。立春の前日で、この日から新しい年（春）が始まると考えられています。

一年の最後の日は、とても重要な日であると考えられていて、新しい年を迎えるために人々は心身をお浄めします。これが、節分の始まりと言われています。

昔から、穀物には邪気を払う力があると信じられていて、大豆はお米や麦と同じくらい重要な穀物であると考えられていました。

今年の節分は日曜日で、来年は月曜日なので、私は今年の節分には是非参加したいと思っていました。

そして、去年の夏にお電話で問い合わせた時に、お坊さんが親切に応対して下さった増上寺に行くことにしました。

節分の前日、友達が翌日会えると連絡をくれました。私は、彼に上野のウサギツアーがとても良いので、是非案内をしたいと伝えていました。

彼が連絡をくれたのはとても嬉しかったです。

そして、私は彼に、節分に増上寺に行く予定であると伝えました。

節分の当日は、お天気で絶好の写真日和でした。

豆まきの前にお寺は餅つきを行い、ついた餅とは別の餅を撒きます。

その後、豆まきが５回実施されます。

豆まきは完全入れ替え制なので、もしも２回目に豆まきに参加したい参列者は、もう一度並び直すようにお坊さんから指示されました。

お坊さんは、ホテル宿泊券や東京タワー入場券などの当たりもあると仰っていました。

お餅がまかれた時、参列者は一生懸命受け取ろうとし、ステージに近づきました。私とお友達は、群衆でもみくちゃにされました。

ふと気が付くと、お餅が私の手の中に舞い降りてきました。

私はポカンとして、お餅を眺めました。指でそっと押してみました。お餅はまだ温かく軟らかかったです。

その時、目に見えない不思議な力が私の中に降りてきました。

少し離れた所に群衆に押されてもみくちゃにされた友達が茫然としていたので、私はお餅を見せました。

そして、豆まきが始まりました。

大豆だけではなく、スナック菓子やフリカケなどが、美しい冬の晴れた空に羽ばたきました。

それは非日常的で宝石のように美しい、見たこともない光景でした。

一生懸命、私は大豆を手に入れようとしました。ホテル宿泊券や東京タワー入場券のことをすっかり忘れて、私はものすごく大豆が欲しかったのです。

参列者の中には、大きな紙袋を頭上にかかげている人もいて、私は「あの人たち、ずるいな」と、少しストレスを感じました。

ふと気が付くと、豆まきは終了していて、お坊さんが言いました。

「はい、最初の豆まきはこれで終了です。完全入れ替え制ですから、後ろの人に譲って下さい。豆が取れなかった人たちも、ココに来ただけでお浄めされていますから、大丈夫です」

お坊さんの言葉に、私は正気を取り戻しました。

ついさっきまで、私の心の中は「豆がほしい」という邪気が存在していたのです。

私は、良識の大切さを学ぶ機会を持てたから、豆が取れなくて良かったと思います。

豆まきの後、私は友達を谷中に案内しました。

お天気の良い冬の谷中のギャラリー巡りは、とても楽しかったです。

１年ほど前、目黒の美術館で会ったヨーロッパ人の女性が、日本の冬のことを「確かに寒いけど、お天気が良くて気持ちいいです」と仰っていたのを思い出しました。

私には、それがずいぶん前のことのような、つい昨日のことのような気がします。

人生って不思議ですね。
