Sumida River Cruise, Ryogoku bashi 両国橋

This is “Ryogoku bash”. Literary meaning is “Both region’s bridge”.

Go through Ryogoku bashi Bridge while looking at the Kanda River on your right.

The current bridge was completed in 1932 by the reconstruction plan after the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923).

National Route 14 linking Tokyo and Chiba goes through this bridge.

Because Ryogoku national SUMO arena is near here, this bridge is decorated with a SUMO motif and has a SUMO ring-shaped balcony.

In addition, the round objects at the both ends of the bridge are said to have depicted image of the fireworks of "River Carnival at Ryogoku".

In 2008, it was designated as a historical building by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

右手に神田川を見ながら「両国橋（りょうごくばし）」をくぐります。

現在の橋は、関東大震災の復興計画によって1932年、昭和7年に完成しました。

東京と千葉を結ぶ国道14号線が通っており、両国国技館が近いこともあって、橋には相撲をモチーフとした装飾が施され、土俵の形のバルコニーが設けられています。

また、橋の両端に見える丸いオブジェは「両国の川開き」の花火の尺玉をイメージしたと言われています。

2008年、平成20年に東京都選定歴史的建造物に指定されました。

This bridge has a SUMO ring-shaped balcony. The size is same with the real SUMO ring! 土俵の形のバルコニーが設けられています。大きさも土俵と同じなのだそうですよ。
