Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

This is my story which was one day before of the announcement of the tourist guide certification test result.

I was nervous because I have been studying for a tourist guide this past 2 years seriously and wanted to be a tourist guide no matter how.

But at the same time, it is no use to anxious about the test which I have already taken. I determined that I would explore and invent a new place as a preparation of my dream guide tour in future. The place was imperial palace in the center of Tokyo.

I found Imperial palace was interesting place for strolling and I can easily imagine that I would be a tour guide and explain Japanese modern history to tourists at here.

Honestly I was a bit exhausted with thinking if I can’t make the test, I have to study one more year. In addition to it, I was an exemption of Japanese history and geography only this year because I pass these items previous year test. This year I only needed to take Japanese modern society test.

Actually studying Japanese history, geography, and modern culture is interesting, but studying for an examination makes me nervous anytime :D

While walking, I noticed that there was a foreigner who was standing in front of the map on the sidewalk. I talked to him, “Can I help you?” But he answered, “No thank you” because he was just watching a map.

I said “Excuse me, I have studied as a tourist guide this past two years and tomorrow is the announcement day of the test result. Can I ask you about your Japan trip?”

He was so kind and appreciate to talk with me for a while. I was impressed his kind attitude toward me, and I felt brighter for everything including the tourist guide test.

When we separated, in addition to saying greeting words, he said to me, “…. and good luck on your test”.

I had deep breath and said “Tank you” to him.

Unconsciously I was smiling.

While walking to the station, my feeling was brighter, “When I say ‘I study a tourism’, such a warm minded unknown person was happily to talk with me and share his time with me, it means studying tourism is worth studying. Even though I can’t be succeed in a certification test, I will take a text in next year. It is simple I will just study tourism as I have done until now”.

Next day, my examinee’s number was on the list of the successful candidates.

メリクリ、あけおめ、ことよろ

これは、観光ガイド試験の合格発表の１日前の出来事です。

私はどうしても観光ガイドになりたくて、一所懸命に勉強をしたので、翌日が合格発表だと思うととても緊張していました。

とはいえ、受けてしまった試験のことを心配しても仕方がありません。

少しでも今後のためになるよう、私はガイドの下見をすることにして、東京の真ん中にある皇居を訪れました。

「皇居は散策するのにうってつけの場所だなぁ。もしかして、私はここで 観光ガイドをしながら、日本の近代史の説明をするかもしれない」という気持ちになりました。

正直なところ、私は「試験に合格できなかったら、もう１年受験勉強を続けなければならないんだなぁ」と考えて憂鬱でした。

前年の試験で地理と歴史に合格していたので、当年だけはその２科目が受験免除で、現代社会のみ受験すれば良かったのです。来年受験する場合は、３科目全てを受験し直さなければなりません。

もちろん日本の地理・歴史・現代社会の勉強は興味深くて面白いのですが、試験勉強だと思うと緊張してしまいます。

歩いていると、道端の地図の前に外国人が立っていることに気づきました。 私は「Can I help you?」とその人に話しかけました。

けれども、その人は「いいえ、地図を見ているだけなので結構です」と返事をしました。 私は彼に「私は観光ガイドの勉強を２年間しました。もしよかったら、あなたの日本滞在についてお話を聞かせて頂いてもよろしいでしょうか？」と、尋ねました。

彼は快く私とお話をしてくださって、その礼儀正しい態度に私はとても感激しました。

観光ガイドの試験のことも含めて、私は何となく明るい気持ちになれたように思います。

しばらくお話をした後、別れ際に彼は、挨拶だけではなく「試験の幸運を祈ります」と言って下さいました。

私は深呼吸をして、「ありがとうございます」とお礼を言いました。知らず知らずのうちに、私は微笑んでいました。

晴れ晴れとした気持ちで駅へ歩きながら、私は考えました。

「私が『観光ガイドの勉強をしています』と言ったら、親切な見知らぬ人が私とお話して下さって、ご自身の旅行について色々教えて下さったんだなぁ。観光ガイドの勉強は、それだけやりがいのあることなんだわ。もしも今年の試験に合格できなくても、また来年受験しよう。今まで勉強してきたんだから、同じようにこれからも勉強しよう」

翌日の合格者発表に、私の受験番号がありました！
