Welcome to Underground Temple

Japanese is following after English.

A few weeks ago I planed to go to Underground Water Discharge Channel tour because one of my friends wants to visit there, but unfortunately, that person suddenly canceled in the morning of the event day.

"I can’t go today but I will give you 1000 yen”.

I replied, “Wait, I try to find a person who wants to go“.

Then I can find an English native speaker participant soon and when I met him at the train station, he taught me that this Water Discharge Channel is introduced on the website as one of the places “A superb views of the world you must visit before you die”.

That person said, he likes to go to museums wherever he takes a travel in foreign countries. I was happy because we have common interest on the way to there in the train.

When 4 of us arrived the train station in rural district of Saitama Prefecture, we bought a lunch at the supermarket and eating it at the bus stop.

One foreigner woman talked to us, “Is this Meetup? My cellphone went bad and can’t contact at all”.

We were laughing each other for this happy encounter and we enjoyed riding the small bus.

We arrived Water Discharge Channel 30 minutes before the tour starting and watched around the facility, explaining video with JP/EN, and so on.

It happened 5 minutes before the tour start, young foreign white couple came in the facility almost running, They stepped up the stairs to go to the reception at the 2nd floor with a quick pace.

I thought in my mind, “Hullo, in addition to us, there are foreigners in today’s tour”.

And after they came down the steps to join the tour. The guy stepped forward to me and gave me bow slightly.

What a surprising!

They are from Russia and they got this facility 30 minutes walking in the rice field from the train station even though this is unknown place for them.

I served as an interpreter for that Russian couple while the tour. When I talked to the woman, she doesn’t speak English and the man interpreted what I was talking.

Through this experience I learned that “It is impossible to create a tourist business of this kind, because foreigners filled with adventurous spirits can do everything by themselves. They don’t need a guide”.

Joking aside, one more happy news for me is one friend is interested in Water Discharge Channel, and he is kind enough to show on his SNS with the comment such as “My country also needs to have this facility”.

His words were big bonus for me as a guide. I hope I can organize Water Discharge Channel tour in coming spring and take a 30 minutes walk in the rice field.

おいでませ、地下神殿

数週間前、友達が行きたいといったので、私は首都圏外郭放水路見学ツアーを企画しました。けれども、その人はイベント当日の朝になって行けなくなりました。

「今日行けないんだけど、1000円は払うよ」と申し出てくれた友達に、

「ちょっと待ってて。もしかして参加してくれる人が見つかるかもしれない」と私が参加者募集を告知したところ、英語ネイティブの方が来てくださいました。

駅でお会いした時に、その人は首都圏外郭放水路が「死ぬまでに訪れたい世界の絶景」としてウェブサイトで紹介されていることを教えてくれました。

その方は外国を旅行する時はいつでも美術館に行くのが好きだとおっしゃって、私達は共通の趣味があったので、電車の中でいっぱいお喋りをして楽しかったです。

そうこうするうちに私たち４人は埼玉の田舎の駅に到着し、スーパーでお昼ごはんを買ってバス停で食べていました。

バス停にいた外国人の女性が「あなた達はMeetupですか？私の携帯の調子が悪くて、全然連絡できなかったんですけど」と話しかけてきました。

私たちは「会えてよかったね～」と笑いながら、小さなバスに乗りました。

私たちは、見学会の30分ほど前に首都圏外郭放水路に到着して、日英字幕付き解説ビデオを見たり、施設の展示を見たりしました。

見学会が始まる5分ほど前のことです。

若い白人のカップルが、息せき切って早足で入ってきました。

彼らは２階の受付に行くために、急いで階段を上がっていきます。

私は「ふ～ん、今日の見学会には私たち以外にも外国人がいるんだ」と思って見ていました。

そうしたら、受付を済ませて見学会に参加するために階段を降りてきた彼らは、私の前に来て軽く会釈をしました。

何てことでしょう！

彼らはロシア人で、全然知らない場所なのに、電車の駅からバスを使わずに30分歩いて来たのだそうです。

私は見学会の間、英語でその人達に通訳をしました。

女性に私が話しかけると、彼女は英語を喋らなくて私が喋ったことを男性が通訳していました。

今回の件で私は「こりゃあ、仕事としてやってくのは無理かも～。外国人って何でも自分でできちゃうから、ガイドを雇う必要なさそう」と悟りました。

まぁ、そういう冗談はさておき・・・。

今回のツアーを企画したら、お友達の外国人がこの首都圏外郭放水路に興味を持ってくれて、SNS上で「私の国にもこの施設が必要です」と紹介してくれたのが超嬉しかったです。

春になったら、また首都圏外郭放水路見学ツアーを企画して、田んぼの中を30分歩きたいと思います。
